From the beginning, our “one tree planted for every two boxes sold” initiative was one way we brought that commitment to life.

Thanks to the support of our practitioner community, this program has had meaningful global impact. Together, we’ve planted over 30,500 trees across projects in Canada, California, Australia, Brazil, and Romania. We’ve also contributed to rehabilitation efforts supporting monarch butterfly migration corridors in Mexico. These initiatives represent a collective step toward healthier ecosystems, and we’re incredibly proud of what has been accomplished.

Due to rising global costs across materials, manufacturing, and logistics, we’ve had to make the difficult decision to discontinue this specific program. Like many of you, we are navigating increased costs—and we believe it’s essential to keep our needles competitively priced and accessible for practitioners who are also feeling the pressure of running a business in today’s environment.

While this change is disappointing, it does not alter our core mission: to provide the most environmentally responsible acupuncture needles on the market.

Our Commitment to Sustainability Continues

Acufast remains deeply committed to reducing environmental impact across every aspect of our product design:

Smarter, fully recyclable packaging

Needle pouches are made from PET1 plastic and are recyclable with other soft plastics

Outer boxes are made from bagasse (sugarcane fibre), making them both recyclable and compostable—without cutting down trees

Less material, less waste

Our packaging is the most compact available for 1,000 needles, reducing shipping volume and energy use

Optional guide tubes mean only practitioners who need them receive them—minimizing unnecessary waste

Our soft tubes use 60% less plastic than conventional alternatives

No plastic retainer tabs are required, thanks to our needle and tube design

Cleaner sterilization, longer shelf life

We use Gamma Ray sterilization instead of ethylene oxide, reducing environmental impact

This method also extends sterile shelf life, helping prevent product waste

Thoughtful design that reduces loss

Our unique accessories support efficient handling and help prevent accidental needle drops

Moving Forward

Sustainability isn’t defined by a single initiative—it’s the result of continuous, thoughtful decisions across the entire product lifecycle. While our tree-planting program is ending, our commitment to innovation, waste reduction, and environmentally responsible design remains stronger than ever.

We’re proud to continue offering what we believe are the most eco-conscious acupuncture needles available—without compromising on quality, performance, or affordability.

Thank you for continuing to be part of this journey with us.

Instead of saving 15%, 25% or even 30% just one day a year, we’d like to offer you up to 79% off every single day, of every single year.

No, this isn’t a massive blow-out sale extravaganza, but 79% IS how much you can save per needle when you switch from single-tubed needles to Acufast Earth Friendly Needles.

Let’s break it down.

We’re not going to single out any needle brands, but first, let’s acknowledge that acupuncture needles range in quality and price. On the high end, we have what we like to call “Rolls Royce Needles”. They are typically higher quality, and higher priced. These needles can ring in at $.12 USD/needle ($0.175 CAD/needle). Then at the lower end of the quality and cost spectrum, we have what we’ll call “Low-Cost Needles” at around $0.02 USD/needle ($0.04/needle).

Acufast Earth Friendly Needles are unique in that they are high quality, but low cost at $0.027 USD/needle ($0.0365 CAD/needle).

That’s 78% less per needle in the US, or 79% less per needle in Canada.

And that’s just considering the cost savings. When you switch to Acufast, here are some other ways you’ll be saving:

Up to 93% savings in the amount of acu-trash (that’s plastic guide tubes, retainers, trays and treated paper) destined for the landfill.

The amount of space in your clinic to store and shelve your boxes of needles. Acufast needles come in the smallest packaging per 1,000 needles on the market.

The amount of CO2 emissions put into the atmosphere. Because Acufast needles come in smaller boxes, they require less space and energy to ship to practitioners around the world.

Even if you were to find your favourite single tubed needles on sale for 50% off this Black Friday, Acufast is still more cost effective per needle!

“Okay, but what if I’m already using bulk-packaged needles, so my cost per needle is currently less than $0.027/needle?”

Yes, technically there are other bulk-packaged needles on the market available, and some of these might be at a lower price point than $0.027/needle. However, our challenge to you is to consider the non-tangible savings that matter to our planet. So even if your current needles cost you less per needle, perhaps they cost the planet more?

Plus, we can’t forget that for every 2 boxes of Acufast needles sold, a tree is planted!

If you’re ready to see how you can start saving up to 79% on your needle costs, while also doing more for your planet, request a sample and give Acufast a try!

Gradually this day began to expand from one day, to multiple days, to the point that April just became known as “Earth Month”. Being that April is when the renewal of spring is in full swing, it is the perfect month for all of us to become part of the solution to the crisis now threating our planet.

As both a consumer and clinician, there are ways we can participate both at home and in the clinic. To reduce our eco-footprint, we have the 5 R’s to guide us. They are Recycle, Re-think, Re-use, Refuse and Reduce. Each one of these actions can be mapped into one of the 5 elemental phases of energy* movement which are cycling through us each day.

Our actions are empowered when we move in accordance with natural energy flows. Use the following table and suggestions to reinforce your resolve to be part of the change needed.

Now, in the clinic, the little things we do each day may seem insignificant, but over time the smallness builds up. If that small thing we do each day is done by millions around the world, the small thing is now a big issue.

The small thing I am referring to here is the use of individually packaged acupuncture needles or bulk packed needles that take up excessive space and use excess packaging resulting in needle waste.

Here’s how switching to Acufast needles effortlessly helps you be a part of the change. The 5 – phases of Acufast are:

You are now not only applying the 5R’s as listed above, but you are planting trees with every two boxes of needles you use! If you haven’t switched yet, this is the month to do so.

Let’s all invest in the 5 phases of energy inherent in nature and do what we need to do in both our homes and in the clinic. April, as Earth Month, has the power of Spring to push for change and improve our ways! Use it! Together we can help restore our planet and ensure a healthy future for the next generations.

*All energy moves through yin yang cycles of low energy to high energy back to low energy. These cycles can be further broken down into phases that are distinct. They are as follows: energy in its lowest state, energy increasing, energy in its maximum state, energy in a stable state (not increasing nor decreasing), and energy decreasing. These distinct, observable phases are not only generative to each other but, in a tensegrity way, control each other such that the movement of energy as it flows through its cycle is harmonious. Health is an expression of the free flow of energy through all aspects of the individual (ie: body/mind/spirit). A TCM/Acupuncturist can use this knowledge to determine where in the cycle of the elemental phases an excess or deficiency is occurring that will contribute to a health imbalance.
Since the creation of the Acufast Earth Friendly Needle and its industry first accessories to control bulk needles, we have received a tremendous amount of positive feedback.

Practitioners have shared the various ways they use the Acubase and Acuclip to manage their style of needling. Everyone is just so pleased that dropped, or contaminated needles, is mostly a thing of the past.

Previously in the training section on our site, we showed how to use the metal strips that come with the Acubase to create a convenient needle tray. Our first configuration allows for the easy movement of needles around the clinic.

This configuration made sense, if the practitioner was taking the clip from the tray, pulling needles on the fly during treatment, then bringing the clip and tube back to the tray for secure placement when they switched sizes. Using the Acuclip during treatments can be seen in the following photo.

Then last week, I got a call from Sean, a clinic owner saying it would be great if we could get a tray that allowed for the Acubase and Acuclip to be positioned with the handles vertical. In this configuration, practitioners could just easily pull needles from the clip or directly load the tube with a needle from the clip. It seemed like a great idea, but where to get the tray? A few days later, Sean called back saying that he thinks he found a good solution using a tray from Ikea called a “Variera Box”. Well, it just so happened that I had one here in our display room! After thanking him, I went straight to figuring out how to create a working example. After a few tries I came up with a compact needle bin, that held 4 commonly used sizes, houses a cool magnetic used needle tray, a recyclable waste tray and a smaller bin for extra needles and swabs to use on the fly.

This very convenient needle bin makes working with bulk needles super easy and convenient. Once you have it set up in the morning, you can load needles, control your waste, and replenish needles on the fly. It is small enough to place on the treatment table or on a small cart beside the table. Plus, it is all contained and easy to move from treatment room to treatment room. This is also a great way for community Acupuncture clinics to take their needles around the treatment area and manage their waste.

The above configuration is just how I set mine up, but of course, you will come up with your own configuration to meet your needling style. For complete DIY instructions and a short video see our training section to make one for your clinic!

Remember using Acufast needles not only reduces your clinic carbon footprint, every two boxes of needles result in a tree being planted! Thanks for being part of the change!

PS. Thanks to Sean Campbell at Cypress Physio for sharing his ideas helping our needling community to come up with effective ways using bulk needles and reducing waste

On top of that, scientists are putting out alarming statistics on the state of our planetary disharmony.

Our call to action was one to create a brand that had a low carbon footprint, and one that as many practitioners using acupuncture techniques could embrace.

As a result, we produce both coated and non-coated Acufast needles to suit the different needs of practitioners. Many practitioners want a relatively, sensation-free, insertion needle for their patients. This is by far the largest percentage of practitioners and thus we offer coated needles. Other types of practitioners, sports, and veterinarian practitioners, want more fascial pull on the needle, to activate the sinew channels. Also, they find that the needles stay put when muscles are twitching during electrostimulation sessions. The demand in this group is less and therefore we offer a limited number of sizes for the uncoated group.

This issue of whether the coating has a negative effect on the body is one that has arisen from time to time. As an acupuncturist, I actually have been quite involved since the early 90’s trying to uncover the story of why some needles entered into the body easily, and others created more sensation. Back then, no manufacturer revealed anything about how their needles were made. Through many inquiries, I finally discovered that some manufacturers coat their needles with a variety of substances. The Seirin brand needle, which became famous for being painless, was the first brand I discovered to have a silicone coating on the first 1/3 of the needle. Then, through further digging, I found that some manufacturers in China were coating the needle with non-medical grade silicone products, while others were even using machine oil! It was a wild, wild west of various standards of quality control, cost-cutting, and competition. As a concerned practitioner and company co-owner (Eastern Currents), when we discovered this, we made sure we verified the needle manufacturing methods and made it clear to our customers if a needle was coated or not. We were the first needle supplier in Canada to do so.

During all this research, I discovered that all hypodermic needles are coated with medical-grade silicone. As a result, as acupuncture became more accepted and popular, manufacturers of acupuncture needles started applying a coating to needles to reduce discomfort. There was one paper that I read in the ’90s that looked into the possibility of small amounts of silicone residue remaining in tissues after needle withdrawal. The article proposed that there may be some trace residue remaining and, in some patients, it may have negative effects. However, that article was over 25 years ago, and I have not seen any further follow-up on this. I have concluded that as no further reported data on this matter has emerged, even after billions of acupuncture needle insertions over the decades, that there is no serious concern about acupuncture needle coating.

However, having said that, some patients are allergic to silicone coating, or for that matter, different types of metal. These patients will respond with, itching, redness, and possible hives around the needle insertion areas. There are different types of stainless steel, different types of medical grade coating and different methods used to coat the needle (some leaving more coating on the shaft, others leaving only a microlayer on the shaft). All these factors can cause patients who are sensitive to have minor or more significant reactions. Mid-priced, to high-priced needles, are sure to use high-quality metals and coating materials. Therefore, practitioners should avoid bottom-of-the-barrel-priced needles as these needles will use inferior raw materials and are bound to create more reactions in sensitive patients.

Since I have researched this very extensively over the years, we made sure that our Acufast brand uses high-quality surgical steel and medical-grade lubricant. We also made sure that we offer both types of needles (coated and uncoated), to be able to treat all types of patients with a full choice of treatment styles.

Check with our distributors to see if they carry both versions of Acufast. If you want non-coated needles and don’t see them as an option, let the distributor know you are interested. If they get enough requests, they will start to carry the non-coated version too!

Thanks for being part of our change movement.

I am writing today to help raise awareness of a new development I think has been badly needed for many years now – a new acupuncture needle and packaging system that greatly reduces waste (acu-trash).

The product is Acufast and this is the passion project of John Stan and Kelly Kitchen of Eastern Currents Ltd. They also are part of the team that puts together the great Net of Knowledge online resources.

As much as I like the idea of reducing the considerable waste disposable needles create, I let John know upfront that I would not be comfortable promoting these products if I did not like the needle quality.

I really, really like the needles. They have a metal wrap handle that is thinner than any I have ever seen and the needle itself is easily as painless as Seiren needles at a fraction of the cost.

Every aspect of the needling process as well as the needle, guide tubes, and their packaging has been reimagined to generate less waste and simplify needling. The Acufast folks even developed a tool to calculate just how much less waste you would generate using their products. It will blow your mind. That tool and a lot of information and videos can be found on the Acufast website www.acufastneedles.com. Oh – and Acufast will plant a tree for every two boxes of needles you buy.

Acufast products are now available for purchase in the U.S. and Canada and will soon be available is the E.U., the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand. Links for U.S. and Canadian suppliers are below.

Canada: Eastern Currents Ltd
USA: Golden Flower Chinese Herbs
USA: Lhasa OMS

Full disclosure. Acufast has become a supporting sponsor of the ANF. They donate $100 a month to help us carry out our mission of educating people about acupuncture. But, as I told John about the importance of needle quality, I would not be giving such a ringing personal endorsement of Acufast products if I did not really like these needles and truly believe this is an important step in the right direction for the acupuncture community.

Thanks everybody for taking the time to read this and your support of the ANF.

Stay well –

Thus, it is understandable that you may feel a pang of guilt at the end of the day when you look at the waste produced from needling. I know, I did and decided to do something about it.

As a practitioner of TCM for 30 years, I found myself alternating back and forth from using single tubed needles to bulk packed needles. Single tubed needles were easy, it was what we were trained on, but the amount of waste just built up so fast. My ventures into bulk needling resulted then from trying to avoid producing so much Acu-trash. However, I just kept getting frustrated with my bulk packed needles as they bounced around so much in the tray, I would occasionally spill them, or I would ponder what to do with my left over needles at the end of my treatment? Would they be safe for use in the next hour…, two hours…, …overnight…?

This was my pattern over the years, a shao yang sort of situation, back and forth and never really settled with either single or bulk packed needles.

In my discussions with my wife and partner, Kelly, we decided, due to our longstanding connections in the TCM industry to really start researching ecofriendly options for acupuncture needles.

Firstly, our journey began with the need to find a manufacturer that makes a consistently sharp and smooth needle using materials that were low environment impact. It turns out, as much as I love my copper handled needles, copper handles are made with a very toxic process that made us pass on that option. We ended up choosing the Korean style spring handle as both the handle and shaft were made of stainless steel, which when compared to all of the options (plastic, chrome, aluminum etc), had the lowest ecological footprint. The subcontracting facility making the needle uses the latest machine sharpening and polishing process producing a gradually tapered symmetric needle with a very fine finished point. While Korean spring handle needles are known for a consistent quality, the subcontracting partner we found had developed newer machines with multiple patented processes that set them notches above other brands. We are very proud to offer these now in North America. Also, after much research, experimentation in packaging, and design, we are excited to offer practitioners the world’s first Eco-friendly Acupuncture needle called Acufast

We are also excited that Golden Flower, in its commitment to offer practitioners choices to help our planet, has jumped on board to one of our first distributors of the Acufast needle in the USA.

We have done so many things to create our earth friendly product that it would far to much to list in this article, but here are the highlights:

Our packaging is the smallest on the market, we worked extra hard to reduce the amount of packaging from our carton, case and individual box size! One box of 1000 needles looks like a standard box of single tubed 100!

Our boxes are compostable or recyclable because they are made from sugar cane fiber. Sugar cane fibers in this case, have been repurposed into a paper like product. This makes for a double win situation as no trees have been cut down to make our boxes and using a by-product of a natural substance, allows for easy, post use, environmental re-absorption.

We use pouch packs to house our needles, and we’ve worked hard to reduce the size of the pouches to even further than what is currently on the market. Plus, our pouches don’t come with a tube. Just needles. You aren’t forced to throw tubes away due to not needing one, or just plain because you don’t use them.

Also, our tubes are 50% less plastic that what other tubes on the market use and… they are pinchable! You may wonder why pinchable is good, but you will have to check the link below to learn more

We also invented two accessories to make using bulk needles super easy! Now even the most diehard single tube users will be confident in using bulk pack needles with our inventions!

There is more on how all this comes together to change not only the amount of waste we produce, but how by being an Acufast user, you are also participating in a 360 solution that gives back to environmental groups with your purchases.

The new needle brand offers a biodegradable package made from sugar cane fiber, reduced and recyclable plastics, and optional tubes that are sold separately.

If only 1000 practitioners switch from individually tubed needles to the new Acufast Eco-Bulk packaged needles, it is estimated that in just one year, over 13,800 Kilos (30,0423 lbs) of acu-trash could be kept out of our landfills.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Doctor, John Stan, and his partner Kelly Kitchen are the owners of Eastern Currents Ltd. and have licensed the products with Health Canada under the brand Acufast – The Earth Friendly Needle. Their relentless effort to reduce acupuncture waste is garnering a lot of attention as one of the biggest innovations for acupuncture in decades.

As the benefits of acupuncture continue to increase in popularity, so too does the number of practitioners that are continually producing vast amounts of acupuncture waste. With more than 10 million acupuncture sessions being offered annually, the amount of acu-waste is piling up at an alarming rate and Acufast is the answer.

Plastics in our oceans and overloaded garbage dumps require practitioners around the world to be part of the solution and take a stand against acu-trash. Acufast stands behind the quality of their products and the Canadian company takes pride in offering a portion of their profits as a donation to various environmental organizations.

Multiple studies on acupuncture have proven the use of a thin solid needle to be an effective technique for the reduction of pain and stimulation of the immune system. The increase in popularity of acupuncture has resulted in a corresponding increase in acu-waste. With more than 10 million acupuncture sessions being offered annually, the amount of acu-waste or acu-trash has been increasing proportionately to the popularity of the technique.

Traditionally, single-use acupuncture needles come individually tubed and packaged in boxes of one hundred needles. Often, the practitioner is required to open multiple single blister packs for the same size needle used in one session. This excessive packaging waste builds up quickly, and practitioners have become increasingly frustrated with the amount of plastic and paper waste generated and the lack of alternative options available to them.

Additionally, different types of acupuncture needles themselves produce varying degrees of environmental stressors. For example, the manufacturing of the different handle types, whether copper, plastic, or stainless steel, can include toxic acidic cleaning baths, excessive plastics, and packaging materials that add an additional front-end, before use, burden on the planet.

To date, there have been modest efforts to address the environmental stress of the profession. Some in the needling manufacturing community have introduced recycled plastics to their products, and some others have bulk packaging for popular needles sizes. While happily received, these efforts are not enough, and the use of bulk packaging has created its own challenges with open packs of needles being vulnerable to spillage and unintended contamination. Eastern Currents Ltd in Vancouver, BC, Canada responded to the call to action from practitioners with a new 360 solution specifically designed to adhere to the principles of reduce, reuse and recycle for environmental sustainability.

The new acupuncture needle brand called Acufast features significant industry firsts which include the following:

Dramatically reduced packaging compared to any brand in the market, including bulk packed needles. The new packaging results in reduced CO2 emissions due to the reduced bulk and weight of shipping materials and the reduced processing of waste materials.

The box holding the needles is made from the waste fibers from sugarcane making it easily biodegradable in commercial composting facilities and is also fully recyclable.

Acufast also comes pouch packed, 10 needles with no tubes. Traditionally bulk packed needles come prepacked 10 needles and one tube. Practitioners generally use fewer tubes than are included with current bulk packaged needles, and some do not use tubes at all, resulting in practitioner frustration with the excess unused tubes going to waste.

Insertion tubes are manufactured with significantly reduced plastic and offer a unique feature of being soft and pinchable. The combination of the two allows for a new loading method for the needle which significantly saves time!

Two new accessories, the Acuclip and Acubase provide acupuncturists with convenience, no needle drop or accidental contamination often associated with bulk packaged needles.

All packaging is made with recyclable or compostable materials. While the recycling of tubes is problematic, the reduction in tube size and separate tube packaging means less tube waste overall. A plastic alternative tube is in the works!

A small percentage of sales are donated back to environmental causes, making the Acufast an industry first, from manufacturing to end-use. It has positioned itself to be a product that gives back to the environment.

Lhasa OMS on the east coast and Golden Flower Chinese Herbs in the southwest, two well-known suppliers of acupuncture needles in the USA, are the first distributors to offer this product to their customers. Mathew Pike, owner of Lhasa OMS says, “We feel that this product is in line with our company values to support environmental efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle. We are excited to offer Acufast as a green choice to reduce Acu-waste in our industry”.

If just 1000 practitioners in North America currently using single tubed needles switch just one of their popular sizes of needle to the new, reduced packaging brand, the reduction of waste is staggering. In just one year 13,832 Kg (30,494.34 lbs ) of acu-waste can be eliminated from landfills.

These numbers are based on just one size of needle in a moderate use clinic, so the numbers become profound if more users make the switch! ”It is very exciting to see the potential benefit to our planet that this brand brings”, says John Scott DOM, and owner of Golden Flower Chinese Herbs.

In addition to the reduced acu-trash, the give-back program donates a portion of the profits back to environmental charities. From raw material reduction, reduced packaging sizes, compostable and recyclable materials, and the charity donations, Acufast is the first acupuncture needle that offers an alternative option for practitioners who care about their patients and the planet.

Eastern Currents Ltd is a manufacturer, importer, and distributor of Acupuncture needles and clinic supplies based out of Vancouver, BC Canada. It has been serving the health care industry for over 24 years, by innovating new products, offering quality products, continuing education, and unparalleled customer service.
